For family offices, startups, historically, have not been their preferred investment vehicle. During the last 10 years, they carefully tested the waters, mainly through investments in VC funds. But after a challenging 2022, their interest in new startup / VC allocations plummeted, since it started to exceed their 10-15% benchmark and they experienced sharp declines in startup valuations. Approaching family offices in 2022 with proposals to invest in venture capital was almost futile.

On this year’s International Day of Climate Action, Elbow Beach Capital hosted its first ever Portfolio Day. The theme of the day was ‘Catalysing Sustainable Growth’, and it explored how startups can successfully balance risk management alongside commercial development to unlock sustainable growth.

The turbulent news we are getting from various corners of the globe only adds up to immense pressures that are already squelching the venture capital sector, and further aggravates the dealmaking slump, even in Silicon Valley, where the frenzy is not what it used to be.
