Vertical farming is on the rise
Infarm is building its second UK Growing Centre, which it claims will be among Europe’s largest with more than 9,760 sq m of space. The site will be located in Bedford, with its first crops of herbs and salads expected in Q4 2021. Infarm plans to construct 100 centres in major cities globally by 2025.

UK startup Deep Branch converts waste CO2 into animal feed
UK startup Deep Branch has raised €8m ($9.5m) to convert CO2 into animal feed to combat the deforestation caused by soya being grown for conventional feed. Deep Branch’s system feeds hydrogen and carbon into a microorganism to produce a high-value protein that can be transformed into animal feed pellets.

2019’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show might have had some impressively manicured moss courtesy of Ishihara’s Green Switch garden and the meadow-like wilderness of Kate Middleton’s Back to Nature garden, but it was Tom Dixon’s Research Studio collaboration with Ikea that caught our eye. This Sci-Fi-like garden helped bring the future farm into the foreground, demonstrating the benefits of hydroponics and giving both food producers and enterprising at-home gardeners something to think about.
