Plant-based milk company Oatly has seen a backlash from activists and consumers over claims it is contributing to deforestation, after it sold a 10% stake for $200M to a consortium including private equity firm Blackstone in July. Blackstone holds investments in Brazilian infrastructure firm Hidrovias, which has been linked to deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

Last year, news of the Amazon fires dominated headlines for months. Roughly 310,000 acres of biodiverse forest land was destroyed across Brazil. The 20% increase in the total number of fires between 2018 and 2019 was record breaking, but depressingly, it seems that this season’s fires will be significantly worse. Not just because of the climate crisis cliff-edge we’re plunging off, but because of a number of other factors as well.

Amazon will enter the digital health sector with a wellness device called Halo, a smart wristband that uses artificial intelligence to track a variety of personal health measurements such as sleep activity, physical exercise and mood. The newly created Coalition of Action on Food Waste will be joined by Kellogg's, Nestle, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and French cheese maker Bel Group, among others. Set up by the Consumer Goods Forum, the initiative features 14 retailers and food majors, all of which have committed to halving food waste within their operations by 2030 and adhering to United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) which encompasses global food waste.
