Can a new independent institute improve the ethics of AI?
Former Google AI researcher Timnit Gebru is launching an independent AI institute to explore how the technology can exacerbate inequality. The Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research (DAIR) Institute will document the harmful effects AI can have on marginalised communities, while looking for ways to improve access to AI development for those groups. Gebru is a longstanding critic of facial recognition software’s bias against people of colour.

For most startup founders, you’ll probably be introduced to your first journalists by your investors. Those introductions are worth their weight in gold, but to transfer that relationship you’ll need to have something newsworthy to write about or to spend some time with that person learning what you can bring to the table too.

How to build and maintain culture during hypergrowth
For any company today, building and maintaining a good corporate culture is critical. In an employee-driven talent economy, culture can be a significant draw to or detractor from your business, and as such accelerate or hinder growth plans. For startups and scaleups who need to foster this positive, inclusive culture while building out their team, the task is much harder. And when that company is doubling in size year-on-year, it’s even harder still.

Could popcorn replace traditional home insulation?
In collaboration with the Bachl Group, scientists from Germany’s University of Gottingen have created a direct replacement for exterior building insulation using granulated popcorn. The material is a natural alternative that can be used in place of traditional insulation – which is often petroleum-based – and is repellant to both water and fire.
