McDonald’s UK & Ireland has rolled out a new-build restaurant in Shropshire, which it claims is its first to meet net-zero carbon regulations in its construction and operations. The building was constructed using a range of recycled materials, including cladding made from recycled IT equipment, a drive-thru lane using recycled tyres, internal wall signs made from waste coffee beans, and kerbsides constructed from recycled plastic bottles.

Of all the messages in the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget, one was particularly clear - we urgently need to address the UK’s digital skills gap. The announcement of a £3.8B investment in training and T-Level courses was welcome news for the tech sector and in the future will undoubtedly go some way to alleviating the crippling skills shortage our industry faces.

Former Google AI researcher Timnit Gebru is launching an independent AI institute to explore how the technology can exacerbate inequality. The Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research (DAIR) Institute will document the harmful effects AI can have on marginalised communities, while looking for ways to improve access to AI development for those groups. Gebru is a longstanding critic of facial recognition software’s bias against people of colour.
